Westmeath libraries celebrate Heritage Week

As part of the recent National Heritage Week 2010 celebrations, Westmeath County Library Service was delighted to play host to a number of events.

Local radio promotes heritage

Athlone community radio is currently producing a series of six programmes called “Heritage on your Doorstep” as part of national heritage week, August 21-29, and will cover such topics as architecture, archaeology, cultural heritage, and local wildlife. Two events being run in conjunction with this are a tour of Athlone town and an exhibition of children’s art, and both events are free of charge.

The effects of the fighting on Kilkenny were devastating. Apart from the human cost, many important buildings bore the brunt of the siege and the cruel occupation that followed it. St Patrick’s Church, from which the opening barrages of cannon-fire had rained down on the city, was completely obliterated. Today not a trace of the building remains.
